Serving Christ in the Spirit of Saint Francis and with Total Fidelity to the Holy Father

To my brother priests, religious and to the laity:

It is a gift from God that Bishop Serratelli of Paterson NJ has given his blessing for the beginning of the Franciscans of Our Lady of the Holy Family in his diocese. Having been a religious and a missionary for many years I felt the call to write this way of life. I wanted a community of men totally dedicated to the Magisterium where brothers would be in a fraternity with others who are all committed to the Church as Saint Francis required us to be. I wanted a life of simplicity that would be real as we live with the needy and serve the Church in the various apostolates. Finally, each friar, in addition to the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, would take a fourth vow of consecration to Our Lady. There is an advantage of having a constitution and norms that have been written and lived out since 2001. It will bring each of us into the life of perfection that God is calling us to.

If you are a priest, a religious, or a lay man that has recognized a yearning for being a part of something new with total commitment to the Holy Father, of knowing the peace of following the Lord in the Spirit of Francis, then give me a phone call. Scroll down to see a short video about the beginnings of this work of God and what are the apostolates. Together we can arrange a time for you to come for a retreat visit and experience what God is doing here.

ARE YOU DISCERNING A VOCATION TO CONSECRATED LIFE?

VIDEO:  This video offers a brief history of the journey that Father Patrick Magee has traveled that led him to God, Africa and the beginning of the Franciscans of Our Lady of the Holy Family. 8 minutes

In the Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey, Bishop Arthur Serratelli has given his blessing to the beginning of a new community, the Franciscans of Our Lady of the Holy Family.

Those called to this life will be entering a Franciscan community of priests and brothers in total fdelity to the Pope. They will be living a life of Gospel simplicity, consecrated through the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, with a fourth vow of total consecration to the Mother of God.

Our Constitutions call us to reach out to the poor and needy through the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The friars would be involved with soup kitchens, responding to the needy on the streets, bringing the message of our Heavenly Father's love and mercy to all.

Some of the works of our apostolate are parish missions, youth ministry, retreat work, and the homeless. The friars will have the opportunity to become ordained priests. Those who are ordained could be administering the sacraments.

We develop our spiritual life by two hours of Eucharistic adoration daily and frequent retreats to places of solitude.

The following is taken from the Constitution

The Apostolate
For this reason I bend my knees to the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth receives its name. (Eph 3:14) Jesus empties Himself to draw us into relationship with Himself and through the Holy Spirit with the eternal Father. The Lord wants all to experience His Father's Love. The apostolate will be a living expression of the Love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart, and her Holy Family, drawing all into the Father’s embrace.  Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and all else will be provided. (Mt 6:33)  Interceding for the poor before the Father, we will bring Jesus to where He was not, so that Christ is in their midst.  You will be Christ for the people and they will be Christ for you.
We will go out to the highways and byways if needed, so as to respond to the materially and spiritually poor.

The Materially Poor
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. (Mt 5:7)
Francis discovered in the leper, Christ. Following Francis’ example, we find some early friars living and caring for the sick at the leper hospital. The poor will be our special concern, that they may see in us the Father's Love and the living out of the Beatitudes within our apostolate and friaries.

The poor in the apostolate
When I was hungry you gave Me to eat, ... when I was a stranger you invited Me in. (Mt 25:31f)  Francis was poor out of love for the Lord. He loved the poor because Christ was poor.  Our charism embraces the corporal works of mercy. We reveal the Father’s Love present amongst us by our love for the poor. Making present the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth is our work.

The poor at the friary
He who loves Me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. ... and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (Jn 14:21,23)  Jesus, Mary and Joseph invite the poor to enter in, to sit down at table with them to share a meal together. The broken and wounded will discover in a tangible way the Father’s Love. The St. Joseph room provides a place in the friary where we are able to sit down and eat with our family the poor. There will always be friars to eat with the poor when they come to us. They will not be treated as outsiders but as family.  Love your fellow Christians, always. Do not neglect to show hospitality, for by that means some have entertained angels without knowing it. Be as mindful of prisoners as if you were sharing their imprisonment, and of the ill-treated as of yourselves. (Heb 13: 1-3)  If a need arises there will be a place for the poor to sleep at the friary in the St. Joseph room. We have provisions for the poor at the friary so that there is food and clothing for our family.

The Spiritually Poor,  Behold your Mother
Hail Lady, Holy Queen, ... Hail His Palace; Hail His Tabernacle; Hail His Home, ... Hail His Handmaid; Hail His Mother. (Francis: A Salutation to the Blessed Virgin Mary)  We are all spiritually poor, in need of the saving grace of Our Lord. He has willed that this gift of Himself would come through His Mother, through her “fiat” to the Eternal Father. Our apostolate involves the bringing of the spiritually poor to their Mother, to “behold” her, and to become consecrated to her Immaculate Heart. As their Mother, Our Lady consecrates her children to her Son’s Sacred Heart.

Behold your son
We bring Our Lady to her children by the spiritual works of mercy. Preaching retreats, parish missions, the Sacrament of Penance, and instructions in the faith, are just some of the important works we do for the building up of the family of God.
